Writing with Voice Writing Workshop Minimize

Children’s author Rooster Morris has traveled all over the nation performing for kids. During his travels he would talk with the students, teachers, and principals. Rooster discovered kids needed help with writing. Invariably, writing with voice is the most problematic exercise for elementary students. Rooster wants to help kids with their writing because he knows how much fun writing can be.

Why would kids listen to Rooster? Rooster’s performances at schools inspires creativity in the audience. The kids have a great time watching Rooster as he demonstrates learning to play the fiddle, performing songs he wrote for his books, and reading from the books using his character voices. The kids listen when Rooster tells them he wasn’t always a writer and that as a child, he struggled with reading.

Rooster believes that removing fear and building confidence are the two most important aspects of writing. If a child understands what VOICE is, and is not afraid to use their creative voice, their writing will reflect that confidence. If a child has the tools to write a story, they will write a story that has their personal voice in it. When a student practices writing on a daily basis, their confidence grows. As confidence grows, fear diminishes. When fear isn’t a factor, kids will write.

Rooster’s workshop focuses on these areas of writing.

Understanding VOICE and how to put VOICE in your writing.

Creating lists in their composition book, including a PERSONAL WORDS LIST.

Ideas on how to think creatively when the pressure is on.

► Writing to prompts.
